How Much Photo Storage Do You Need for a Wedding?

"Unlimited" and "plenty" show up on almost every wedding photo app's pricing page. Neither one is a number. If you've ever tried to actually plan around a phrase like that, you know it doesn't help much. Here's the real maths, and what actually changes it.

The rough maths

Start with three numbers: how many guests you have, roughly how many photos each guest takes, and how big each photo file is.

A typical wedding guest takes somewhere between 5 and 20 photos and videos over the course of a day, depending on how much of a photographer they think they are. A modern phone photo is usually 3 to 8 MB. A short video clip, even a compressed one, is easily 30 to 100 MB for something under a minute.

So for 100 guests, averaging 10 uploads each, mostly photos with a handful of short videos mixed in, you're looking at somewhere between 3 GB and 15 GB total. That's a wide range, and the reason it's wide is video, not photos.

What actually changes the number

Photos are cheap. Video is what blows past a storage estimate.

A single minute of HD video from a phone can be 100–200 MB. A handful of guests recording the speeches or the first dance can add gigabytes on their own, fast. If your app allows video uploads and your guests actually use that feature, plan around video being the majority of your storage, not the photos.

Voice memos are the opposite problem: tiny. A 30-second voice memo is usually under 1 MB. You could collect a thousand of them and barely notice.

Resolution matters too. If guests upload full, uncompressed originals rather than a phone's default "optimised" size, expect files 3–4x larger than the rough numbers above.

A worked example, three sizes

Small wedding, 40 guests: roughly 300–400 uploads total, mostly photos with a few short videos. Expect somewhere around 1.5–4 GB.

Medium wedding, 100 guests: roughly 800–1,200 uploads. Expect somewhere around 4–15 GB, depending heavily on how much video gets used.

Large wedding, 200+ guests: roughly 1,500–2,500 uploads. Expect somewhere around 10–30 GB, sometimes more if video is popular at your event.

These are estimates, not guarantees. A wedding full of enthusiastic amateur videographers will blow past the low end fast.

Why you don't have to work any of this out with Twirl

Here's the part that actually matters for you: with Twirl, none of the maths above is something you need to do.

There's no storage tier to pick, no "how much space should I buy" decision to make before your event, and nothing to guess wrong. You pay one flat €25, once, and every guest can upload as much as they want, full resolution, for the two months your event is live. No calculating. No pre-buying a plan sized for "small wedding" or "large wedding." No upgrade prompt halfway through your reception because you hit a cap nobody warned you about.

We built it this way because we did this maths ourselves for our own wedding, and it was a genuinely annoying thing to have to think about on top of everything else. So we just removed the decision. One price, everything included, no storage tier to guess at.

If you want the full picture of what's included at that price, the pricing page has it laid out. And if you're weighing this against what other platforms actually charge once you add up the tiers, our cost comparison walks through that too.
