What a Wedding Photo App Actually Costs

"Free" and "starts at $29" are the two most common numbers you'll see on a wedding photo app's homepage. Neither is usually the number you actually pay. We got curious about what the real total looks like once you add in what most couples end up needing anyway, so here's the arithmetic, laid out plainly.

Starting point: a typical "free" tier

A free tier commonly caps you somewhere around 100 photos, with either a watermark on downloads or compressed, lower-resolution files. For most weddings, guests will blow past 100 photos before the ceremony's even over. So the free tier isn't really an option for most couples, it's a preview.

Adding what you actually need

  • More photos or unlimited storage: often the first paid tier, somewhere in the $39–$59 range as a starting point.
  • Full-resolution downloads instead of watermarked or compressed: sometimes bundled into the tier above, sometimes a separate add-on, occasionally another $20–$30 on its own.
  • HD video uploads: frequently excluded from lower tiers entirely, requiring the next tier up.
  • RSVP management: if it's not built in, you're now paying for, or at least managing, a second separate tool.
  • A longer storage window, if the default is shorter than you'd like: sometimes a recurring monthly charge rather than a one-time fee.

Add those up, and a "$29 to start" plan can land somewhere between $80 and $150 once you've actually got what you assumed was included at the outset: enough storage for a normal-sized wedding, full-resolution files, video, and a place to manage RSVPs.

Why this happens

It's not necessarily bad faith. Tiered pricing makes sense from a business standpoint: a low entry price gets people in the door, and the real revenue comes from the upgrades most people end up needing anyway. But it does mean the number on the homepage is rarely the number you'll actually pay, and you often don't find out the real total until you're already invested in the setup and reluctant to start over somewhere else.

Where flat pricing changes the maths

A flat, one-time fee that includes everything from the start, unlimited guests, full resolution, video, RSVP, sidesteps this entirely. You know the total before you've uploaded a single photo, because there isn't a second number waiting behind a feature you assumed was already included.

We priced Twirl at a flat €25 for exactly this reason: not because it's the lowest number in the category, but because it's the only number, with nothing else waiting behind it.
