Why We Built Twirl the Way We Did
We didn't lose any photos at our own wedding. Nothing dramatic happened. What happened was smaller and, honestly, more annoying: a pile of small frictions that added up to a genuinely bad experience for something that should have been simple.
Guest photos ended up scattered across three different WhatsApp groups, because nobody had agreed in advance which one was "the" one. A separate photo-sharing site we'd set up for the day technically worked, but barely: guests had to create an account to upload anything, half of them gave up, and the ones who didn't got compressed, lower-resolution copies of photos that had looked great on their own phones. RSVP lived somewhere else entirely, a different tool with its own login, disconnected from everything else, so cross-checking who was actually coming against who we'd need to follow up with meant flipping between two systems that had never heard of each other.
None of this was a crisis. It was just death by a thousand small cuts, the kind of thing you don't notice individually while you're in the middle of planning a wedding, and then notice all at once, afterwards, when you're the one stitching together photos from four different sources trying to build something you'll actually want to look back on.
The part that actually annoyed us
It wasn't that good tools didn't exist. It was that every one we looked at was either missing a piece (photos but no RSVP, or RSVP but a clunky, separate photo add-on), or gated the features we actually needed behind a tier we hadn't budgeted for, discovered halfway through setup, right when we were already committed. Nobody was upfront about the real cost until we were already in too deep to want to switch.
What we actually wanted
Something guests could use without installing anything or creating an account. Full-resolution photos and video that didn't quietly get compressed on the way in. An RSVP that lived in the same place as everything else, not a separate tool with its own login. And a price that was just the price, stated up front, not a low number that turned into a higher one once we found out what was actually included.
That's the whole reason Twirl exists as one thing instead of two or three. Not because we had a single dramatic moment we're trying to prevent for other couples, but because we sat down after our own wedding, made a list of every small annoyance, and decided none of them were actually necessary.
Best, Zuzi & Jason
